Two Cape-based entrepreneurs are breathing new life into vintage Vespas. In adding a rental division, Scoot Doctor owners, Neil Felgate and Pete Milne will not only expand their ingenious business model but are, at the very least, set to welcome a few more members into the Vespa-loving, “free riders’ club”.

Bill Holloway and Mauro Hernandez of Masterworks Woodworking in San Jose, CA, salvage condemned city trees, then build beautiful bicycles out of them – so from “urban tree to wood bike”. The story of these bikes goes from the felling of a family’s guardian tree, through the woodworking process, and finally, the completion of art you can ride.

Questions and answers with Malcolm Pringle on his third Paralympics.

Tell us about the Paralympics in Athens in 2004?
It was a very emotional Paralympics, as my best friend died in 2002 and so I dedicated my 800m race to him. I broke the world record again with a time of (1:58.87). This was the first time I broke the 2 minute mark at a major competition. It was a very well organised event. I called my parents back in South Africa after I won the gold medal and my mom was crying with happiness.

How was it being back in South Africa?

Questions and Answers with Malcolm Pringle on his second Paralympics in Sydney which he believes was his best.

Tell me about the Paralympics in Sydney in 2000?
There were about 100 000 people at the opening ceremony and the noise level was so intense it was like being in an earthquake. I had great expectations as I knew what the Paralympics was about and how big the event was.

Tell us about your setback before you left for Sydney?

Questions and Answers with Malcolm Pringle on his first Paralympic experience

How did your running career all begin?
Well at the age of three I won my school obstacle course and from then on nothing could hold me back when I had a pair of running shoes on.

What is it like having a disability? And how do you feel when you’re out on the track?

With the paralympics about to kick off and the SA team having left for London 2012, we at the 'ZA Playground' were paid a visit by Malcolm Pringle.  He is about to head over to the games as a spectator this time round to cheer on our athletes.  He has been sponsored by Pick 'n Pay during his career and they are still looking after him.

We have always collected mushrooms from forests, but we have never tried growing them ourselves. At the recent Be Inspired talk held in Cape Town, Gary ‘The Mushroom Guy’ explained how easy it is to grow your own Shiitake mushrooms at home, and more surprisingly, told us about how eating these mushrooms has had a positive impact on his health.

It is counter intuitive to think that honey from hives in our cities is often cleaner than from hives situated around agricultural lands, but this is often the case as urban honey does not contain pesticides. We spent a morning with a passionate urban bee keeping couple, who shared their experiences with us, and inspired us to get involved in urban bee keeping.

As Autumn begins in the Southern Hemisphere, it is easy to find chestnuts strewn along the side of the road. This reminds those of us, who are foragers, to get out there and hunt for food across our city. The Green Renaissance team spent two hours before work one morning, demonstrating how easy it is to gather and prepare some tasty chestnuts. Go out and try it yourself.

Dale Steyn’s on-field fiery aggression is tempered by a quieter passion off the field. He offers nature a respect he tends to refuse batsmen. The African bushveld is his refuge, a place to escape the scatter flash of being the world’s number one ranked test bowler.
