Trail Running News - May 2013

Please provide a brief description for this image

First of all, congratulations to all our NBMC members that took part in the ProNutro African X. We had a couple of podium positions coming out of this event, well done to all of you, even if you did not make the podium. To finish African X is a great acomplishment.

It feels like winter arrived overnight without any warning. Cold and dark in the mornings and it gets dark very early in the evenings. This means that we need to make a couple of time changes to our running schedule. As from the month of May our weekly trail runs will start at 17h00 in the afternoons. I know it is early, but running later is just too risky of rolling ankles, even if you have a light. When Mother Nature is not playing along I will post on Facebook and the Trail Running Notice board on our website that the run is cancelled. This is only if it is going to storm, based on

News about the "Mountain Warrior" is that it will still be held in September and not in November. This is a great event and a very good preperation race for those that are going to do the "Dryland Traverse" in November. When entering either of these races, put (NBMC) after your surname, i.e. Cornel Botha (NBMC). I have organised to get discound for these event for every 10 entries they recieve from us (NBMC). Just mail me your name aswell, so Ican keep book from my side. Lets try and make these two events "Red Army" events.

I have also been awarded the NBMC cycling portfolio, as Pieter Joubert stepped down as cycling captain. As cycling will be taking up a lot of my time in the beginning, I will be asking for some of you to assist and act as vice captains at our weekly runs, as well as our monthly pack runs. I might even combine some of the MTB rides and Trail runs.

The program for the month of May 2013:

Our “Trail Race of the month” will be the Jonkershoek Mountain Challenge (JMC) on Sunday 5 May 2013. This is one of my favourite playgrounds, but do not underestimate these mountains. Do not attempt the JMC Extreme if you are not an experienced trail runner, they call it Extreme for a reason. There is also a 21km and 10km that will also test all your trail running skills. Good luck to all of you doing the JMC, I will be there and try to pitch the NBMC gazebo with some Steri Stumpie’s at the finish.

Our “Monthly Trail Pack Run” will be on Saturday 11 May @ Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve. I am planning 3 routes, a 10km for the walkers, a 15km for the intermediate group and 20km for the long route. This run is not too technical and nothing compared to Kasteelpoort. Make sure you take all emergency equipment and enough dry clothes for after the run. We will go for a nice breakfast somewhere in Paarl.

For all pack runs you have to take at least 1 - 2L of water and a wind jacket and a Buff or beanie. You should always have a small emergency bag with a space blanket and strapping etc. Never go into the mountains on your own or when the weather is foul. For this reason we have pack runs to cater for fit and unfit, so do join us to enjoy the beauty of our mountains.

“Weekly Trail Runs”.

There will be no trail run on Wednesday 1 May 2013 as the Safari 21km is taking place on the day.

Week 1 – Thursday 2 May 2013 at Bellville Golf Course.

Week 2 – Wednesday 8 May 2013 at Altydgedacht Wine Estate.

Week 4 – Wednesday 22 May 2013 at Durbanville Hills Wine Estate.

Please support the above wine farms as the farmers open their farms for us to use, and in return we can show our appreciation by supporting them.
